Genesis 19:17,24-26 tells us, "And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed…Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; And He overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt". The heart of Lot's wife was divided. Her affection was not set on the things of the Lord. She was trying to serve both the world's system and the Lord.
Luke 9:59-62 says, "And He said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow Thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God".
Once a person has become a new creation in Christ Jesus, there is nothing to look back, or go back, to. The believer in the Lord Jesus Christ matures in their relationship with Him by regularly fellowshipping with Him in prayer, reading and meditating in His Word, and doing everything He shows you in it. The more maturity that one realizes, the pull from the world, the flesh, and the devil becomes less and less. To look back from following the Lord brings destruction. Hebrews 10:38-39 says, "Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, My soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul". Amen.
